Pro Tips

Techniques used by voice coaches, actors, and public speaking trainers.

Force your mouth muscles to work harder by holding a pen horizontally between your teeth while reading aloud.

  1. 1Hold a pen or pencil lightly between your upper and lower teeth — not biting down hard, just enough to keep it in place.
  2. 2Now read a passage or recite tongue twisters aloud. Your lips, tongue, and jaw must compensate significantly to produce intelligible speech.
  3. 3After 5–10 minutes, remove the pen and speak again. Your articulation will feel noticeably crisper and more effortful.
  4. 4This works because the restriction forces your articulators to over-produce each sound, building muscle memory for clearer pronunciation.
  5. 5Practice 5 minutes daily for 2 weeks to see a lasting improvement in clarity and diction.
